‘‘Anything,’’ he called over his shoulder. ‘‘I’m easy.’’

Too easy where you’re concerned, he realised bitterly. Any other man would have tossed her out on her ear by now. But what was he doing? Making excuses for her, clinging to any train of thought which would accommodate his desperate desire to keep her as his wife, and to keep having her body. It had to stop. He had to read that report, talk to Rico again for some balance of opinion, then hopefully make some tough decisions.

As soon as the bathroom door was safely shut, Dominique rolled over on the cream satin quilt and buried her face in her hands. She was perilously close to crying, yet she wasn’t sure why. There was no real reason for her to be afraid like this again, no reason to worry that her marriage was heading for disaster.

Yet she was worried.

Was it because of the kind of sex Charles was suddenly wanting? Or was the fear still her own inner panic over loving anyone as much as she loved her husband?

She’d been cripplingly close to letting him have his way with her this afternoon in that ghastly mausoleum of a house. His forcefulness had excited her, there was no doubt about it. On top of that, they hadn’t made love all day and she’d been wanting him badly.
